CLIMATE:
Sarasota has an average annual winter temperature of 61.50° and an average summer temperature of 80.1°. Average annual rainfall is 57.11".

TRANSPORTATION:
The Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, at the northern edge of the county is served by seven major carriers, five commuters, charter services and two fixed-based operations. It has excellent facilities for general aviation. One bus line serves the city and both Sarasota and Bradenton counties at convenient locations. There are several common carriers serving the region from fixed terminal facilities, and almost 40 other trucking firms offer regularly scheduled service to the area. Rail service is available.

CONFERENCE FACILITIES:
Sarasota has 11 major convention facilities, some on the beaches, some downtown or on routes north and south. They are fully equipped for handling group meetings. There are also two modern, air-conditioned auditoriums, Municipal Auditorium, with 1,800 seats and Robarts with 4,500. Hotel and motel rooms in the immediate area are estimated at 3,500 in downtown, North and South Trail areas, Lido Beach and Longboat Key.

CULTURAL ARTS:
The Ringling Museum of Art - the State Art Museum of Florida includes the third largest art library, museum archives and one of the country's premiere collections of 17th century Italian paintings. The Old Master Collection also includes five world-renowned tapestry cartoons by Peter Paul Rubens. In addition there are Late Medieval and Renaissance works in addition to modern art. Ca'd'Zan (Venetian dialect for "House of John") the winter home of the late John and Mable Ringling, is derived from Italian, French, Renaissance, Baroque, Venetian Gothic and modern architecture. The Circus Galleries is an assemblage of circus art, posters, costumes, props and carved circus wagons. The Florida West Coast Symphony is one of the state's leading professional orchestras. Sarasota boasts a wide variety of play houses including Florida Studios Theatre, Players of Sarasota, Golden Apple Dinner Theaters, Theatre Works and the Asolo Center for the Performing Arts. The Sarasota Opera and the Sarasota Ballet offer superb performances during the season. The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, a 1,800 - person capacity theater, offers a wide variety of shows, Sarasota has received international fame for the breadth of its cultural programs in art, music, dance and theatre.

EDUCATION:
There are 36 public schools (elementary, middle school, senior high) as well as many private, parochial and special purpose schools, Higher education is offered at the University of South Florida at Sarasota / New College, Ringling School of Art & Design and at Manatee Community College's South County campus. Mote Marine Laboratory, located at City Island Park, is doing extensive environmental research.

EVENTS & ATTRACTIONS:
The Sarasota area has an exceptional group of botanical attractions, including Selby Gardens with its orchids and air plants and Jungle Gardens with its bird and flower sanctuary. The Bellm's Cars & Music of Yesterday Museum features antique mechanical and musical devices. Circus Week and Circus Parade is held in early January. The Sailor Circus is a popular attraction featuring public performances given by students from Sarasota's schools. The Medieval Fair, hosted by the Ringling Museum, draws thousands of visitors each year. Information on any of these attractions may be obtained from the Sarasota Convention & Visitors Bureau, 655 N. MISCELLANEOUS
There are over 190 churches of almost every denomination in the area. Publications serving the area include one daily newspaper, several weekly newspapers and community magazines. Sarasota Memorial Hospital is the area's largest with 988 beds. There are three other hospitals in the county, 12 nursing homes, more than 500 licensed physicians and surgeons, approximately 160 dentists, orthodontists and periodontists. City Hall is at First Street and Orange Avenue, and the Chamber of Commerce is on 1819 Main St., #240 in the Sarasota City Center. There are numerous shopping centers, including downtown, Siesta Village and nationally famous St. Armands Key.

SPORTS:
Sarasota has been dubbed the "City of Champions" because of the championship athletic teams in the area high schools and youth sports. Sarasota. is training headquarters for the Cincinnati Reds baseball team, who play exhibition games here in March. The annual Labor Day Regatta brings hundreds of sailboats for racing each year and the SunCoast Offshore Grand Prix, held around July Fourth, features power boat races. Professional golfing tournaments, water-skiing, boating, the Annual Tarpon Tournament and other water-oriented sports are popular.
