Nancy Dennis
by Pete Theisen
Member of the Sarasota Personal Computer Users Group, Inc.Nancy's first exposure to the SPCUG was by invitation from an 82 year old lady friend back in 1990 when everyone was using Windows 3. Using boring DOS software, Nancy worked with her husband in their business and had never really cared much for computing. It took one visit to SPCUG seeing Windows projected on the big screen to get her hooked.
Early in her membership she won Lotus SmartSuite and decided that she needed to learn how to use the software. Since teaching is a good way to learn, she began teaching classes in Ami Pro that spanned a couple of years. Nancy learned a lot, and made friends along the way. (She still prefers Lotus WordPro to Microsoft Word.)
In 1995 Nancy began working with a couple of friends formerly from SPCUG to form a new user group in Venice. They published their first newsletter, with Nancy as the editor/publisher in June 1995. Nancy was the editor, board member, and SIG leader for three years in the Venice Area Computer Users Group. After leaving that group in mid 1998, she rejoined the SPCUG and began teaching again. Nancy joined the board as a Director a year ago and agreed to learn the Membership Chair job shortly thereafter. Nancy and her husband are retired, and spend their weekdays taking care of their 2-year-old granddaughter, Lucie. She has been the "model" for many of the classes that Sharon Rump and Nancy have taught in scanning, photo editing and web page design. Nancy bought Lucie her first software at age 9 months, and she is still the only person Nancy allows to use her computer.
Nancy is on her third computer purchased here locally from Discount Computers and highly recommends their service and support. She is the editor/publisher of her church's newsletter, their database manager, as well as their web master (www.lifeatbeneva.org). Most everything Nancy can do on the computer she credits to our user group, and is very thankful that someone invited her. :
