Hope Hertz
by Pete Theisen
Member of the Sarasota Personal Computer Users Group, Inc.Hope was born in New Canaan, Connecticut. She attended Boarding Schools and High School in Massachusetts, and with an insatiable appetite for learning, took a BS degree at Amherst College and a BA at Radford College.
Hope married Martin Hertz when she was 21, he was an Army officer. With this, Hope became a "Natural Catholic Jewish Princess", as she puts it, explaining that she was raised Catholic, her new husband was Jewish and he always made a Princess of her. When he retired from the Army, they moved to Sarasota. They had one daughter. Hope lived in various areas of United States and Europe due to her husband's career, notably Paris, France for 4 years.
Hope has always been a volunteer. Her volunteering started as a child with her mother at The Visiting Nurse Association. Throughout her early marriage, Hope also volunteered in teaching Bridge and Arts and Crafts. The last 7 years before moving to Florida and while living in Radford VA she volunteered in politics as well as social events requested by the commanding officer.
She visited all 50 of the United States and enjoyed 48 cruises, nearly encircling the world by ship, and by the foreign train service. Upon moving to Florida, her husband volunteered to establish the Senior Friendship Center, involving her as well. They both then became involved in building up the Retired Officers Club. For more than 27 years she has undertook a variety of efforts such as arranging monthly luncheons. Hope was also one of the health care advisors for the club.
Her additional services included volunteering at the Florida Studio Theatre as well as serving as a director for the Tampa Bay National Association of Investment Clubs.
Hope joined SPCUG in the spring 1997, it was her first experience with a computer. With Vinny LaBash as her mentor, she was soon teaching computer basics. She soon became an SPCUG director since she was able to handle her PC and managerial skills together.
Since joining the SPCUG board of directors Hope has served in several positions. Currently she is the second vice president and has previously been the SIG Chairperson, Volunteer Coordinator, General Meeting Floor Coordinator, a SIG teacher and the Special Events Coordinator. She has presented the free program "Computers Are for Everyone" on behalf of SPCUG several times.
She sees a continuing challenge in planning for the future. We always need new volunteers as those currently serving complete their terms. In addition to all her work with the group and various organizations, she has found time to teach in other directions. At the Senior Friendship Center, for example, she has taught sewing, designs jewelry for her own use and keeps a 6 machine peer-to-peer network in her home in case she needs it. Four of the six are laptops that are kept loaded and ready to go to make presentations with her projector for just about any occasion.
Hope describes herself as "a Jack of all trades and a master of none".
This means she can do most anything, and much more proficiently than she admits. She is an extremely valuable asset to SPCUG and to the community of Sarasota.
