Nancy DeMarte/ No Dumb Questions
by Pete Theisen
Member of the Sarasota Personal Computer Users Group, Inc.No Dumb Questions is a one-person computer teaching/consultant business. Nancy DeMarte works with home computer users, not businesses, and travels to her clients' homes to work with them.
Nancy DeMarte began the business in 1998, a year after she retired from her position as an Assistant Superintendent of Schools near Rochester, NY, and moved to Florida with her husband. She had also taught high school English for 20 years before becoming an administrator as well as graduate courses for the State University of New York. She also taught many staff development workshops for teachers regionally.
Nancy DeMarte's experience with computers dates back to the mid-80's. She used computers both at home and at work and, although she took several courses in specific software, etc., she is mostly self-taught.
"In my business," Nancy DeMarte says, "I work mainly with new computer users who need help in any number of areas, such as Internet and email, getting around on the computer, or specific software. My areas of software expertise are MS Office - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher. I also assist people with computer set-up, scanners, digital photography and editing.
I let the student's need determine exactly what topics are covered. Last year, for instance, I helped a gentleman set up a store on Ebay, and helped several people set up anti-virus and firewall protection."
Nancy DeMarte charges $25 an hour and encourages clients to commit to 4 or 5 hours of total time in order to become proficient in their area of interest. Most sessions are about one hour long.
As a SPCUG volunteer, Nancy DeMarte helped develop the curriculum for the Windows series of classes last year and currently teaches the Getting Started class for beginners.
