The Yahoo Forum... Join Now!
by Phil Sorrentino
Member of the Sarasota Personal Computer Users Group, Inc.

If you are already a member of the Yahoo Group, you are more than aware of the benefits of membership. Membership in the Yahoo Group is a really good example of Members Helping Members. It’s amazing how many technical and not-so-technical questions are answered in any given month. For any of you who are not part of the Yahoo Group, you can join just by going to our Website and clicking on the "Yahoo Group Join Now" button on the right. Once you are a member, you will receive an email for each of the questions that are asked by another member. And even better, you will receive an email for the answers, as they are answered by other members. And if you have an answer to a question, you can reply to the group with your answer (which will in turn be sent to all group members). This is a really slick way of getting and providing help on all sorts of computer topics. The only thing better may be having a Computer Guru living in your home.

The Yahoo Group is a moderated group, meaning that a moderator (an SPCUG member) allows or disallows posts (messages) to be sent to the Group, so that only posts that are in the interest of the Group get sent to all of the members. All Yahoo Group members can send posts to the group (via the moderator), and all members receive all of the posts that are allowed by the moderator. Guidelines for acceptability are set by the SPCUG Board of Directors, and implemented by the moderator. The moderator’s job is to assure that commercial advertisements or objectionable comments, those not in line with the Group’s purpose, are not sent to the members.

The Yahoo Group is like a huge computer information database. There are many Group members who have many years of experience in the computer field and are very generous with their information, in the form of answers to questions. The many answers to the very diverse questions sort of form a distributed database among the members of the group. I’m not sure that there is any other place you could get, or even buy, the quantity and/or quality of computer related information available through the SPCUG Yahoo Group. If you are a member, glad to have you aboard, if you’re not yet a member –join and start taking advantage of this wonderful resource. And who knows, you may be able to help someone out with your answer to a future Yahoo Group post.
