BAD HYPERLINK?? Occasionally for reasons beyond our control, a hyperlink provided here will not work. After carefully checking your typing (needs to be 100% accurate), the only suggestion we can offer is that you go to Google and enter the name of the software. If a more current hyperlink is available, this is the best place to look for it.
Please also note: Most of the software mentioned below is freeware. It is gathered through researching usually reliable sources. I do not personally try most references, time being the obvious factor.
EULALYZER - Making it all easy. License agreements - a pain? End user license agreements (EULAs) are the bane of most computer users. No one wants to read through pages and pages of boring text before installing a program. And many programs put their license agreements in small windows that require lots of scrolling. So many people either skim them or skip reading them altogether. But it can be dangerous not to read license agreements. License agreements can provide information about the intentions of software, and other bundled components.
Have you ever installed a program, only to have your desktop taken over by advertising? It may have been noted in the license agreement that you simply clicked past. If you aren't reading the license agreements, you have no idea what you could be agreeing to. You should always read license agreements before agreeing to them. But now there's a way of making that much easier. Free EULAlyzer can analyze license agreements in seconds, and provide a detailed listing of potentially interesting words and phrases. Discover if the software you're about to install displays pop-up ads, transmits personally identifiable information, uses unique identifiers to track you, or much much more. www.javacoolsoftware.com:80/eulalyzer.html
EVERNOTE 1.5 allows you to easily capture, store and quickly access typed and handwritten memos, webpage excerpts, emails, phone messages, addresses, passwords, brainstorms, sketches, documents and more! With EverNote, you can create notes in multiple formats, including text, Web, email, handwriting, image clips and custom templates. You don't need to save your notes manually - EverNote saves them for you automatically.
This is like your standard sticky note application on steroids. It has just about everything you could ever need when taking notes via your PC. To make things even better, it has a Firefox extension as well - so you get even more integration between programs. EverNote makes it easy to store and quickly access notes, Web page excerpts, emails, phone messages, and more. EverNote innovates by storing content on an endless, virtual roll of paper. You can quickly scroll chronologically through your notes similar to scanning through handwritten notes in a notebook. www.evernote.com
SERVICE PACK 3 DELAYED. Service Pack 3 for Windows XP was scheduled for next year. But now Microsoft has pushed it back to early 2008. This will be four years after the release of Service Pack 2. Some are accusing Microsoft of forcing users to purchase Vista.
ZSOFT UNINSTALLER enables you to keep track of any changes that are made during installation of new software, and later reverse those changes and completely uninstall the newly added program. The program requires you to create a Before/After system snapshot during which it records any files and registry keys that were added or changed during the install. Any program that has been analyzed with a system snapshot can later be removed by reversing all the recorded changes, optionally using a step-by-step process that allows you to confirm every file deletion. ZSoft Uninstaller also provides access to your standard Uninstall list, and allows you to hide or filter entries from the list, thereby shortening it and making it easier to manage. (Ironically, ZSoft Uninstaller does not completely remove itself if you uninstall it, but leaves behind some files and an empty Program menu entry). www.zsoft.dk/
DESKTASK enables you to display your current Outlook tasks and appointments on your desktop. The information is shown in an overlay that integrates with your desktop wallpaper and automatically updates itself to display the latest information. You can customize the appearance and configure how many days of appointments and tasks to include, filter tasks by category, and more. Clicking on an item can optionally open it in Outlook. A very useful desktop addition for those that manage their appointments with Outlook. www.carthagosoft.net
UNFORGIVEN ORGANIZER. When it comes to personal information managers, most of them are pretty dull and lifeless. They all do the same jobs and they all do them with little or no surprise. It has been a long time since one of these programs really got my attention. Of course, that was before I found out about the Unforgiven Organizer.
"Unforgiven Organizer is a funny (but solid) powerful organizer with an eye catching interface. It lets you to manage yearly, monthly, weekly and daily tasks based on their frequency of occurrence. It also features a Contacts Manager that links with e-mail client, Internet browser and Windows telephony. The integrated Block-Notes is text editor and note organizer at same time. One basic To-Do List complete the opera." This program might not have the prettiest interface, but it does get the job done. Also, as the freeware author states, remember that the Unforgiven Organizer is Sisterware. That means whoever uses it has the moral obligation to introduce his or her sister to the software author. http://spazioinwind.libero.it/unforgiven WINSIZER. Sure, resizing windows on your screen does not exactly take a degree in computer science. When it comes to resizing them to a specific size though, that is where things get a little more tricky. Just like with many problems, there are plenty of ways to find the solution. One solution is the freeware program called WinSizer. "WinSizer resizes the windows of popular Internet browsers such as Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, Mozilla Firefox, and Opera, or any other window class. Its purpose is to help web site and software designers, who typically work on a high-resolution screen, to assess their user interfaces as they would appear on smaller screens. Built-in screen sizes include 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768; you can also specify any custom size." When resizing the windows, WinSizer takes the size and position of the Windows taskbar into account and subtracts that from the requested screen size. This mirrors Microsoft Windows behavior in that it reduces the available desktop area for the window. For example, a typical 800x600 screen setup has actually an available desktop area of 800x572 once the taskbar is subtracted. This is one handy and small freeware download for anybody who wants to develop applications or Web sites at different resolutions. www.tarma.com/index.htm#/products/winsizer/index.htm
DISK CLEANER allows you to easily clean up disk space that is used by temporary files like those in the system temporary folder, the Internet Explorer Cache and Cookies folder, Recycle Bin and various other areas of your system. In addition, you can erase personal tracks like recently used documents, typed URLs and more. The program comes with an attractive, user friendly interface. Disk Cleaner allows you to create cleaning profiles, and can automatically run at system start without user intervention. It supports Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera as well as various 3rd party applications. www.diskcleaner.nl:80
DEMOCRACY PLAYER is a free Internet video player that allows you to choose from a variety of channels, subscribe to video feeds, and view them with the integrated player. The channel guide includes more than 600 channels - mostly podcasts and user submitted video clips - and you can also add your own podcasts by entering their URLs.
The program also includes video search for Google, YouTube, and Yahoo! Video, allowing you to find additional content based on your keywords. Democracy Player integrates BitTorrent and can work as a standalone BitTorrent client. Other features include a personal media library, video playlists, fullscreen mode, automatic channel downloads, and more. www.snapfiles.com/get/Democracy-Player.html
MOZILLA STARTS WORK ON FIREFOX 3.0. Noted computer columnist Paul Thurrott writes, "With the lackluster Firefox 2.0 completed this week, Mozilla Corporation is beginning work on Firefox 3.0, which it plans to ship in 2007. One of Firefox 3.0's biggest features is Places, a feature that was originally scheduled for Firefox 2.0 and then dropped. Places is essentially a relational database-based storage system for bookmarks and browser history, and would have been the only major new feature in Firefox 2.0 had it come out on time. (As it is, Firefox 2.0 is just a minor upgrade from previous versions.) Firefox 3.0 will also include a major new rendering engine and a lower user rights model similar to that utilized by IE 7.0 on Vista. That all sounds wonderful, but for now, Firefox 2.0 leaves me feeling slightly let down. Firefox is still a wonderful browser, but I was hoping for more from a supposedly major release."
LOGMEIN FREE. Travelers who can't live without full access to their home-base computers will pay for a high-end remote-access solution. For the rest of us, the remote control provided by LogMeIn Free (free) should be enough. Just set up an account and install the software on your base computer. Now you can securely log in from any other Internet-connected computer to run programs and access data. You'll have to upgrade to the Pro version to get file transfer and synchronization, but LogMeIn Free still lets you copy/paste between the local and remote systems or remotely control your e-mail or IM client to send yourself a file. www.3amlabs.com
PDF995. Sharing editable documents via e-mail makes sense when you're collaborating on the result, but not when you aim to broadcast a finished document such as a press release. With an inexpensive tool such as PDF995 ($9.95) turning a document into stable, noneditable PDF format is as easy as printing it. Just send the document to the PDF995 "printer" instead of your regular printer. If even $9.95 seems too steep, you can use the product free and pay by viewing an advertisement each time you use it. www.pdf995.com
SHIELDSUP!! AND LEAKTEST. Naturally, you have a router as well as a personal firewall, but is it really working? Gibson Research ( www.grc.com ) has several free utilities that can help you assess the security of your network. Gibson's most popular utility by far is ShieldsUp!!, which can scan your public IP address for either common ports or all ports. Excellent tutorials on the site help you understand the results. LeakTest is a simple program that attempts to connect to GRC's Web server. It's intended to test whether your firewall will block unknown outbound connections that could "leak" data out of your network. It's free to use and worth trying out.
SPEED TESTS. You're paying for a fast broadband connection, but just how fast is it? Are you getting the speed you're paying for? A number of sites will test the speed of your Internet connection for free. These include: www.dslreports.com/stest and www.speakeasy.net/speedtest
REMOVE HIDDEN DATA. Don't let Microsoft Word give away your secrets: Use Microsoft's free Remove Hidden Data to save a copy of an open file with all revisions, reviewers, comments, and other hidden data removed. (Microsoft Corp., www.microsoft.com; search for rhdtool.exe to download.
FREEWARE ASAP UTILITIES 3.11 provides two-click access to 300 convenient features. THE YAHOO WIDGETS ENGINE (free) lets you run all sorts of handsome mini-apps from anywhere on your desktop, at any time. You can run an animated clock, a calendar, or a day planner. Or a stock ticker. Or a notepad. Or a virtual picture frame. And that's just the beginning. Thousands of widgets are already available from the Yahoo! Web site, and if you don't see what you want, you can build your own. These little floating tools are wonderfully useful, but, more important, they're so much fun to look at. http://widgets.yahoo.com.
AUDACITY. How much would you pay for a 16-channel audio editor that can record at up to 32 bits/96 kHz, remove hum and hiss, read and write WAV, AIFF, and MP3 files, and has envelope editing, equalization, mixing, resampling, and unlimited undo/redo?
You don't have to pay a thing: Audacity is free, and it's spectacular. It can also alter playback speed without pitch shift, shift pitch without changing the speed, and includes a host of other effects. Audacity can't edit WMA, AAC, or other proprietary formats, but it accepts standard VST plug-ins in case its built-in effects aren't enough. It runs on Windows, OS X, and Linux. http://audacity.sourceforge.net
ID3-TAGIT. You can find many freeware ID3 tag editors, but you won't find a better one than ID3-TAGIT (free; PayPal contributions accepted). Using a standard Windows Explorer hierarchy, you navigate to your music folders, where ID3-TagIT gives you instant access to the tag information. You can edit individual files, a group, or the entire folder. You can also edit filenames, update them from FreeDB, and add sequence/track numbers for players that require tagged songs to maintain album order. The program even corrects capitalization and removes special characters from filenames. www.id3-tagit.de
YAHOO! TOOLBAR WITH ANTI-SPY includes a search box, a pop-up blocker, an antispyware utility, and loads of quick links to various Yahoo! properties (My Web, Yahoo! Sports, News, Yahoo! Mail, and more). GOOGLE TOOLBAR adds a number of new features for its Version 4 beta. You now get suggestions for your searches as you type, along with the ability to add and position bookmarks and toolbar buttons. This is on top of its already full-featured toolbar, which gives you an on-the-fly spell-checker for webmail and forum posts, as well as Google's PageRank tool. http://toolbar.google.com
MERRIAM-WEBSTER ONLINE TOOLBAR. Get definitions-and pronunciations-on the fly with the useful Merriam-Webster Online Toolbar. Quick-launch buttons to a thesaurus and a "word of the day" feature round out the package. www.m-w.com/toolbar
FASTERFOX speeds up your Firefox browsing experience. You can turn on a special prefetching feature that increases the load on Web servers but turns up pages faster on your machine. The basic options box includes choices such as "courteous," "optimized," and "turbo charged." One neat bonus: a timer display in your Firefox status bar tells you how long it took to load the current page. http://fasterfox.mozdev.org
ADBLOCK blocks nearly all ads on the Internet, including flash animations. You may need to train it-right-click on any ad you see and choose "Adblock." Better yet, download the Adblock Filterset.G Updater from addons.mozilla.org along with Adblock; this will automatically configure it to block the most common kinds of ads. http://adblock.mozdev.org

Free trial. http://windows.fileoftheday.com/archives/email_emailtrackerpro.html
CRAIGSLIST. One of the big things that the internet does is connect people with each other. And one of the best sites for connecting with someone else is Craigslist (www.craigslist.org). Craigslist is divided into geographical sections - the first thing you do is find your state or country in the list. Narrow it down as much as possible - here in Florida, I can get as specific as the Tampa Bay area. In Maine, the entire state is considered one area. Then, choose what you would like to see. Everything on Craigslist is put there by another Craigslist user. It is like a huge classified ads section. You can find: jobs in any category, items for sale, items for free, houses or apartments for rent or for sale, personal ads, people to share a ride to work, discussion forums on almost any topic, etc.
HOW TO REINSTALL SYSTEM RESTORE. The System Restore feature in Windows XP is a great one - but sometimes it quits working properly (or at all). In this case, you may need to reinstall it. Here's how:
- Click Start | Run.
- In the Run box, type %Windir%\INF. This should open your WINDOWS directory to the INF folder.
- Find a file named SR.INF (if you have Explorer configured to hide common file extensions, it may display as SR).
- Right click the SR.INF file and select Install. Windows may prompt you for your Windows installation source path.
- If you have service packs installed, point it to the %Windir%\ServicePackFiles folder.
After the System Restore files are reinstalled, restart Windows. Important note: this process will remove any existing system restore points.
FIND OUT IF YOUR PC IS OVERHEATING WITH THIS FREE UTILITY. Is your PC getting toasty? Is your CPU getting charred and your motherboard melting? Okay, I'm exaggerating, but if your components are reaching a potentially damaging temperature, Motherboard Monitor can let you know. This free program monitors and reports on the temperatures inside your PC case using the built-in sensors on the processor and motherboard. If things get too warm, it can sound an alarm and automatically shut your PC down before anything gets damaged. It's a great tool if you build your own PCs because it can tell you if your system is overheating due to insufficient ventilation. It can also monitor the voltages that your power supply is outputting, warning you if they fall below a certain level. In these days of power-hungry graphics cards (sometimes in pairs with up to four GPUs) and the practice of loading a case with drives, an overextended power supply can lead to crashes and data loss, so it's good to know that the power supply is up to the job. http://pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,7309-order,1-page,1-c,alldownloads/description.html

CHANGE THE BACKGROUND AND TEXT IN WORD 2002. Typically most word processing applications, Word included, displays text as black characters on a white background. Depending on the lighting within the area where your computer is located or the sensitivity of your eyes (possibly even personal preference), you may want to change the text color and background. Word 2002 allows you to alternately have text displayed in white on a blue background. You can configure this in Word: Open Word; From the Tools menu, click Options; The Options dialog box will appear. Select the General tab; Under the list of General Options, click Blue Background, White Text; Click OK and Word will immediately apply your changes. You can revert back to the default at any time by repeating the steps above.

You never need to worry where you are. www.rememberthemilk.com
STARTUP CONTROL PANEL. Programs that automatically start up with Windows can be annoying, especially when they hog system memory and bog down your system. Startup Control Panel is a free program that lets you take control of this process. It lists all of the programs that are set to start when Windows does and allows you to decide what gets to start up with Windows and what doesn't. It's available as both a Control Panel applet or as a standalone program and it's simple to use. Don't want a program to start up with Windows? When Absolute Unfailing Privacy Counts Your computer is a storehouse of personal information, some of it sensitive and private. From time to time you will add or delete some of that data or information. In deleting, you want to be certain beyond question that what you delete is gone completely, forever and beyond recovery by any means. That's where East-Tec eraser will put your mind at ease by doing exactly that. It is the king of erasing-deleting utilities now in Version 8 for 2007 with some significant advances. We have used and recommended East-Tec Eraser for some years now. Based on its outstanding performance and ease of use it continues as our choice for 2007.
All but the most neophyte of computer users are aware that deleting files does not destroy them. They are easily recoverable by a wide variety of undelete utilities long afterward. East-Tec Eraser is the utility you need to perform your deletions if you want them gone positively, completely and forever so that they can't be recovered by any hardware, software, or investigative means even the most vigorous of those used by the Department of Defense, law enforcement, or some snooping hacker. It performs the ultimate erasing to completely satisfy your peace of mind.
With East-Tec Eraser you can erase files, folders, or an entire drive. You can choose among a list of privacy setting as to how vigorous you want your erasure to be. You can also erase a drive to positively eliminate just information that was previously unsecuredly deleted by normal ordinary means.
East-Tec Eraser does its job by overwriting data a number of times (your choice for 13 different security levels) and then applying a variety of other procedures when erasing, such as scrambling file properties and erasing nearby free space. The choices are fully explained by a generous and comprehensive help file that is context sensitive (new for '07).
A selection of user or software created items to erase is provided, including logs, cookies, caches, temporary files. web browser info, email and newsgroup data, recycle bin contents, slack space in existing files. You can apply erasing to the files of your choice from the context menu in Windows Explorer, the recycle bin, or from files you drag or enter into the appropriate window displayed in East-Tec Eraser . You can schedule repetitive tasks, and wizards are available to help you in the erasing procedures. You can elect the degree of system resources you want to use in erasing, depending on the speed of erasure you wish to apply. A variety of other user-elected modifications are available to make East-Tec Eraser work in conformance to your wishes.
Version 8 for 2007 includes improvements like erasure settings for Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 2, Windows Media Player 11, Norton Antivirus 2007, and more. You can now provide protection for the files and folders of your choice to prevent accidental erasure, and display or hide file names while erasing, and import or export erase options.
There is no shortage of erasing utilities, but in our experience East-Tec Eraser is the best and most complete we have seen. You can obtain a final or trial download from East Technologies at east-tec.com. The software lists for $49.95.
The thought undoubtedly occurred to you, "Well, how can I erase my hard drive if the program I need, East-Tec Eraser is on the drive I am trying to erase?" The answer, of course, is that you can't. The only way to do the job is to use software that will start up and run before Windows. In its infinite wisdom, the erasing experts at East-Tec have devised such a program called DISPOSESECURE. You can download this software at east-tek.com and install it on a CD or floppy disk. If you restart your computer with this disk in place (provided your Bios is set to recognize a floppy or CD first in the boot order), DisposeSecure will boot instead of Windows. It will give you the option of securely erasing any internal or external drive bearing a drive letter which is attached to your computer including your own that contains your C: partition. All you need do is follow the simple instructions on your screen when DisposeSecure boots up.
DisposeSecure needs to be purchased separate and apart from Eraser and at additional cost. It can also erase any or all of the drives attached to a network. As is the case with East-Tec Eraser, DisposeSecure will positively and completely do an erasure. DisposeSecure is aimed more so at business than home users. It can be used to perform unlimited erasures on unlimited computers. It sells for s hefty $199.
Whichever of the two erasing software you are using, a complete erasure is a time consuming procedure. You might consider letting it run overnight. It does take time to do the thorough job you are assured with East-Tec software. :
