Koslow – April 1990 Newsletter
Vice-President of Sarasota IBM-PCUG
I have experienced a
varied and diversified existence. From early high school years at the Bronx
High School of Science as a member of the chess team and the soccer team, to
years as an honors graduate in Industrial Engineering at the University of
Michigan, life was never dull.
World War I interrupted my undergraduate time at
Michigan. It was off to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, where
I spent one year at sea during the war, one year at the academy, and then back
to engineering school. After graduation, a stint as quality control engineer
was again interrupted, this time by the Korean War, where I served in the
Marine Corps for two years. Working as an industrial engineer, I took my
Masters Degree in Industrial Engineering at Columbia University.
Destiny intruded again. The next twenty-five years were
spent running my own commercial finance company in New York City. During those
years I was on the Board of Directors of the National Commercial Finance
Conference.
I took an early retirement, and moved to Sarasota to play
tennis. Shortly thereafter, I became Treasurer of both the Sarasota Sailing
Squadron and of the Excelsior Condominium Association. I was later President
and Treasurer of the Excelsior Condominium Association and remain Treasurer of
the Sarasota Sailing Squadron.
A new interest in microcomputers rapidly developed when
the Sailing Squadron bought its first computer. Within a year I had both the
Sailing Squadron and Excelsior doing their accounting on computer.
The Sanyo user group was a first experience with computer
user groups. When the Sanyo group disbanded, I took the Sanyo library to the
new Manatee Users group where I became co-librarian and then librarian. At the
same time I became librarian for the Sarasota IBM PCUG, and developed a joint
library. Presently, I am librarian for both the Sarasota and Manatee PC User
Groups and Vice President of the Sarasota PCUG.
During the past three years I have become a computer
consultant specializing in accounting programs (like Dac Easy, Peachtree and
Cougar Act I), vacation rental-reservations programs and property management
on the computer. Along with this I sell complete turnkey computer packages
both hardware and software. However, I do not allow this part time occupation
to intrude upon my tennis.
