  ALL COMPUTER EDUCATION CLASSES ARE FREE FOR MEMBERS
All classes require that you be a SPCUG member.
 
 
     
  You may register for Basic classes at the Classes table on general meeting night or you may register via mail directly with the instructor. Include your name, SPCUG membership number, phone number and  Email address in your email registration request.  A confirmation will be sent by the instructor when all information is received.

In order to provide our membership with a comprehensive group of classes for the beginning computer user, the following are the classes beginners should take before moving on to advanced classes:
   
     Getting Started (two 1-1/2 hour sessions)
     Basic Internet and Email (two 1-1/2 hour sessions)  
     Basic Computer Maintenance (one 1-1/2 hour session)

The following classes are recommended for beginners, but are also open to all members:
     
      File Management (two 1-1/2 hour sessions)
       Simple Computer Back-up (two 1-1/2 hour sessions)
      Internet Safety (one 1-1/2 hour session)

To attend a class listed in this section, you must have taken Getting Started or exhibit to the satisfaction of the instructor knowledge of the material taught in Getting Started.

Getting Started (2 sessions)

Getting Started is designed for the absolute beginner. This course will cover computer terminology, parts of a computer, how to use a mouse, and work with the "Windows" that are on your computer screen. You will also learn how to create and save a simple document.

Prior to taking this class, students should have taken “Getting Started” or have exhibited the knowledge and skills taught in that class. This class introduces students to browsing and searching the Internet, as well as learning the basic functions of most email programs, such as forwarding an email and attaching a photo or document to an email.

File Management (2 sessions)
Prior to taking this class, students should have taken Getting Started or have exhibited the knowledge and skills taught in that class. This class introduces students to the organization of files, such as documents and photos, on a computer. It includes skills such as saving a file, finding a file, creating folders, moving files into and out of folders, and understanding the folder tree.

Basic Computer Maintenance (1 session)

Simple Computer Backup (2 sessions)

Prior to taking this class, students should have taken “Getting Started” or have exhibited the knowledge and skills taught in that class. This class focuses on the importance of keeping copies of the documents, photos, and other files on your computer to a location away from the computer. Three simple methods of back up will be included: copying to a flash drive, CD or DVD, and Windows Backup and Restore (File History in Win 8). Handouts will be provided.

ADVANCED AND SPECIALIZED Classes

The following classes are primarily intended for those individuals who have completed the Basic Classes and wish to extend their computer expertise in specific areas.

iPhone for Beginners (3 sessions)
So you just got an iPhone - now what? Come to this series of classes and discover the in's, outs and uses of your new iPhone. Learn what all the icons and buttons are for. Customize your home screen, close and delete unwanted Apps, and learn how to make folders.  Get your App Store account set up so you can download applications. Discover how to take photos and videos, and then email them. By the time you leave this course, you will be able to change your settings and wallpaper with ease, access Wi-Fi, and add contacts to your Favorites list. This is a hands-on class. Bring your iPhones charged and ready to play, as well as your USB cable and passwords (Apple Store ID and password, and your email password).

Now you know the basics of the iPad and want more. Come to this class and learn how to use many useful applications. You will learn how to sync your email with your PC, organize and email you pictures, and use Safari effectively. We will also cover how to move photos from your iPad to the computer. You will learn how to have a Face Time call with friends and family. This is a fun class, but you should have taken the intro class before attending.

Storytelling has been important through the ages. Today's tools make telling your story much easier and more creative than ever before. This class will help you envision, write, and distribute your story. Bring a mobile device (tablet or SmartPhone) if you have one, and memories, so you can work on one story out of the many you have. We will also discuss how to deal with memorabilia that you have saved over the years. Come learn alternate ways to tell your story using technology.

This three session class will cover some of the more popular apps and show you the basic operational similarities that many of the apps employ. Beginning Photoshop Elements (4 sessions)
This is a structured classroom course in manipulating (editing) photographs using Adobe Photoshop Elements. The instructor will demonstrate facility with the program using Photoshop Elements version 11; however, if the student has version 8, 9, 10, or 11, understanding will be satisfactory.  You should bring your laptop loaded with Photoshop Elements to class to emulate what is projected on the screen. The instructor will provide practice materials and a tutorial. Because the tutorial is difficult (for the instructor) to print, you must register by February 8 to obtain a copy, at no charge. Contact the instructor if you wish to take the class, but do not have a laptop. We will attempt to provide one.

Digital Photography Revisited (1 session)
In this class you will learn all the things you wanted to know about digital photography, but were afraid to ask. Beginners as well as experienced shooters will learn work flow tricks to handle photos from the camera (or cell phone) click to the enhanced image's final destination. Also included will be easy ways to improve the appearance of every image, how to set up your digital camera for best results, and how to organize and keep track of large numbers of photos. Considerable time will be spent solving individual problems, so come with your questions and don't be shy.

Working with Tables in Word (2 sessions) - NEW
One of the most versatile features of Microsoft Word is the Table. It can be used to display text, photos, graphics, shapes, charts and practically anything else a Word document can create. But working with tables can be tricky. This class will help you learn how to insert and control tables within documents. You will learn how to move and resize them, add color and texture, add or delete borders and do other formatting. Plan to bring your laptop with Word 2007 or later installed or arrrange to borrow one from     SPCUG so you can work with tables in this hands-on class.

Intro to Spreadsheets (2 sessions)
In the same way word-processing helps you use words, spreadsheet applications  help you use numbers. They can help with home finances, investments, and other activities which are based on numbers. Microsoft Excel, which is part of the Microsoft Office suite, is one that many of you own, but perhaps do not use. In this class we will introduce you to the basic concepts of creating a spreadsheet, including entering numbers, making a table, entering forumulas to make calculations, and putting that data into a chart or graph. Students must be familiar with using a mouse, keyboard, files, folders, and other basic Windows skills before taking this class.

In this class you will learn how to download and install three free programs which will keep your computer free of viruses, spyware, and clutter in your registery and temporary files folder.  Using these programs takes only a few minutes a week to keep your computer running efficiently. Beginning PowerPoint (3 sessions) - NEW
Microsoft PowerPoint is one of the most popular programs in MS Office*. With it, you can create electronic slide shows. In this class, you will create slides in a variety of ways. You will insert photos, ClipArt, WordArt, SmartArt, tables, and learn how to modify them. You will have great fun with this or you get your money back ($0)!  You will learn how to use transitions, Photo Albums, and Animations. Setting up, printing, and distributing slide shows will also be covered. You will prepare at least one PowerPoint show to present to the class. These shows are wonderful for communicating with family, business, or community, as well as preserving occasions for yourself. Please plan to bring a laptop with PowerPoint installed to class or work with the instructor to borrow one from our refurbishing center.

*You can purchase MS Office Home Premium for 5 computers for $9.99 per month. These can be in different homes, is desired.
